Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls

Step 8  – Practice Walking Safely

To practice walking safely, take slow, short steps with your toes pointed slightly outward.  For additional balance, keep your hands at your sides and not in your pockets to support yourself if you begin to fall.

Extra precaution needs to be taken during inclement weather conditions, particularly when snow and ice are present:

–      Walk flat footed.

–      Take short steps to maintain your center of balance over your feet.

–      Keep your head up and don’t lean forward.

–      Walk slowly. Never run on snow- or ice-covered surfaces.

Practicing walking safely is pretty basic but is also critical to the prevention of slips, trips and falls.
