Machine Safeguarding Basics
Most machine accidents occur at the Point of Operation. This is where the machine contacts the workpiece.
Causes of Machine Accidents:
- Reaching into the equipment to “clear” a jam
- Not following Lockout/Tagout procedures
- Unauthorized employees doing maintenance operating machinery
- Missing or loose machine guards
Hazards created by industrial equipment can cause death or severe injury. Making sure the Point of Operation is properly safeguarding is critical to injury prevention. Never operate a machine that is not properly guarded.
Never reach into a machine to clear a jam. If you are authorized to do so, use tools and equipment specifically made for this purpose. Always follow established Lockout/Tagout procedures. Report problems, loose guards and malfunctioning equipment to supervisors.
