Housekeeping on the Job Site

A construction worker was working on a job site on the second floor of the building.  A lot of wood pieces, scraps and sawdust had accumulated around sawhorses, power tools and materials.  At the end of the day, he tripped over some of these items and fell down the stairwell injuring his neck and back.

It is important to remember these tips:

  • Keep floors dry, clean and clear of waste.
  • Make sure work area is well lit
  • Keep hoses, power cords and welding leads away from traveled paths
  • Keep materials away from openings, roof edges and trenches
  • Keep all work areas, walkways and stairs in and around buildings clear
  • Remove unused materials
  • Maintain clear access to exits, fire extinguishers and first aid kits
  • Keep chemicals and gases away from heat sources and electrical equipment
  • Store materials and equipment to not cause injury to workers
  • Provide containers for collecting the different wastes
